A parade that went backwards to ensure we keep moving forward.

INSIGHT

In 2016, a wave of conservatism took the world by storm. A potential reversal in many of the basic rights achieved over the past decade. New Orleans, as one of the most open minded and welcoming destinations in the United States, had the opportunity to send a message to the world.

IDEA

During Mardi Gras, an entire LGBTQ pride parade marched backwards — stripping away its pride to symbolize where the country might be headed.

HOW IT WORKED

LGBTQ groups and local organizations were invited to participate. As the marchers walked backwards, they stripped away festive costumes and makeup – receding back into seclusion. After disappearing, the participants ceremoniously came back and restarted the celebration in a sign of solidarity.

"PARADE MARCHES BACKWARDS TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY."

"NEW ORLEANS SAYS IT'S NEVER GOING BACK IN THE CLOSET."

"A POWERFUL STRONG MESSAGE ABOUT INCLUSION."

"AT LEAST ONE CITY IS TAKING A STAND FOR OUR RIGHTS."
